Wacky Races

Driving in Indonesia, probably like every other country bar orderly England - is an experience worth participating in.

We've been hiring scooters to try and fit in with the other drivers bent on suicide. It is however, amazingly calm. The technique is to accept a constantly slow motion collision like icebergs grinding together. So far we have only been nudged by two cars.

Peeping your horn indicates who wishes to be in charge, but without the special code word for when things start to go awry.

Travel by car is not much better with most drivers reserving 4th gear for special occassions only.

Even as pedestrians we have managed to bring a whole roundabout in Borneo to a standstill - simply because we are white. We must learn to stand in less accident prone hot spots.
